Jones' Guitar To Be Returned
June 13, 2008 - Country

By Ken Tucker, Nashville

Country legend George Jones and his 1957 Martin 000-18 acoustic guitar will be reunited after 46 years of separation on June 14.

The guitar was stolen by two boys in 1962 while Jones performed in Fort Worth, Texas. A short time after stealing the guitar, which includes a strap that includes Jones' name bordered with streaks of lightning in honor of his famous hit "White Lightning," the two youngsters sold it to Larry Berry for $10.

Berry told the Associated Press that he's been trying to reach Jones since the 1960s to return it, and finally got through this year.

"It'll be a big relief," Berry, a retired oil man, said by telephone. "I've written letters for years and called recording studios trying to find him. You can't believe how hard it's been."

Berry recently contacted radio station KKUS in Tyler, Texas, in attempt to reach Jones regarding the stolen guitar. He will return the guitar to Jones during his concert at Diamond Jack's Casino in Bossier City, La.
