Jazz Briefs: Playboy Jazz Festival, Freddie Hubbard
May 30, 2008 - Jazz

By Gail Mitchell, L.A.

- Trumpeter Terence Blanchard and bassist Marcus Miller have been added as special guests at this year's Playboy Jazz Festival (June 14-15 at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl). Blanchard will perform on Saturday (June 14) with The James Moody Quintet. Miller will join 2008 Grammy winner Herbie Hancock on Sunday, doing a special performance of Hancock's 1983 hit "Rockit" with newly added performers DJ C-Minus and 41 student dancers from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. Also joining Hancock during his Playboy set will be vocalist Amy Keys.

- Jazz trumpet legend Freddie Hubbard returns with his first studio album in seven years. "On the Real Side" (Times Square Records, June 24) finds the 70-year-old revisiting some of his own classics, like "Up Jumped Spring," backed by The New Jazz Composers Octet. The octet also accompanied Hubbard on his last album, 2001's "New Colors."
